Francis Marion survives Lander with 71-69 win on Davis stick-back

GREENWOOD, SC – Junior guard Ryan Davis' offensive rebound and stick-back with 16.3 seconds left provided the winning points and Francis Marion University survived a late Lander University trip to the free throw line as the Patriots claimed a 71-69 victory, Wednesday night (Feb. 7) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

FMU improves to 14-7 overall and moves into sole possession of fourth place in the PBC standings with a 9-7 mark.  Francis Marion will host the University of North Georgia on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for Homecoming.

Senior guard Detrek Browning paced the Patriots with 20 points, while junior Brandon Parker tallied 17, Davis 16, and senior Judah Alexander 10.  Both Browning and Parker hits four three-pointers, and Parker was 6-of-10 from the field for the game.

Sidney Robinson led Lander (8-14, 4-12) with 16 points, while Jordan Dingle added 14, and Zane Rankin 13.

With the score knotted at 69-69, FMU senior Warren Specht missed a 13-foot jumper from the right side, but Davis grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the winning hoop.

On Lander's ensuing possession, Robinson missed a long three-pointer from the top-of-the-key, but Srdjan Ivic corralled the offensive rebound and was fouled as he went to the hoop with 1.4 ticks left on the clock.  He missed the first free throw and when he missed the second shot intentionally, Alexander grabbed the defensive rebound to end the contest.

Lander scored the game's opening six points only to see FMU score the next seven to take a one-point lead.  An 8-0 spurt allowed the Patriots to open a 20-11 advantage, but the Bearcats scored four straight to close the gap to 20-15.

Davis then scored eight consecutive points to give Francis Marion its largest lead of the half at 28-15 with 7:13 left before halftime.  Lander responded with eight straight points of its own to close within 28-23. The Patriots would leave the floor at halftime owning a 38-34 advantage.

FMU connected on 7-of-13 three-point attempts over the opening 20 minutes, but made only one trip to the foul line which was converted by Davis. Browning (13) and Davis (11) combined for 24 of Francis Marion's first-half total.

The second half was tight throughout. FMU led by as many as six points (48-42) and held the advantage for most of the second stanza.  Lander rallied to take a 61-60 lead on a Robinson three-pointer with 6:21 remaining.  Two free throws by Alexander and a tough jumper in the lane by sophomore guard Jaquez Smith restored a three-point FMU margin at 64-61.

The Bearcats tied the score at 67-67 with 1:17 left, but Browning drained a pair of free throws with 1:02 on the clock to put the Patriots up 69-67.  Ivic scored on a lay-in with 46.8 seconds remaining to again tie the score (69-69) and set the stage for Davis' game-winner.

Francis Marion shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 11-of-24 from three-point territory, and was 12-of-17 at the foul line.  Lander connected on 49 percent from the floor, was 6-of-17 from long range, and was 13-of-18 at the free throw stripe.
