Team-effort allows FMU to crush Nighthawks 90-54

FLORENCE, SC – Junior forward Victor Hunt scored a career-high 17 points off the bench to lead five Patriots in double figures as Francis Marion University crushed the University of North Georgia 90-54, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion ups its overall record to 15-7 and moves into a tie for third place in the PBC standings with a 10-7 record.  Eleven of the 12 Patriots who played scored, much to the delight of the Homecoming crowd of 1,887.  The Patriot bench accounted for 46 points nearly equaling the Nighthawks' total output.

FMU continues its three-game homestand on Monday when the Patriots entertain Young Harris College at 7:30 p.m.

Hunt registered his point total on 7-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point arc.  Senior guard Detrek Browning tallied 15 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Brandon Parker recorded 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Junior reserve guard Ryan Davis added 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals, while senior forward Warren Specht chipped in 10 points and six boards.

Sophomore Bennett Fuzak led North Georgia (10-13, 8-9) with 12 points, while guard Ebo Smith added 10.

FMU raced to a 15-2 lead as North Georgia missed on nine of its first 10 field goal attempts.  The margin was 12 points at 32-20, but FMU scored 10 straight to push the advantage to 22 points (42-20). The Patriots held a 52-28 lead at halftime after shooting 55.3 percent over the opening 20 minutes.

A 10-4 spurt to open the second stanza extended the margin to 30 points at 62-32 following a tip-in dunk by Hunt with 15:23 left.  North Georgia made a brief run that trimmed the margin to 70-50 just under the midway point of the half, but Francis Marion closed the game with a 20-4 run.

The Patriots ended the contest shooting 54.7 percent from the floor, including 9-of-22 from three-point range, and FMU made 11-of-19 free throws.  UNG was held to 32.2 percent shooting, including 9-of-27 from beyond the arc, and the Nighthawks made only 7-of-17 free throws.  FMU held a commanding 48-27 rebounding advantage and a 19-6 edge in second-chance points.

FMU forced 20 turnovers which were converted into 25 points.

The 36-point margin was the largest for FMU in conference play in 15 seasons dating back to an 87-49 win over USC Aiken on Feb. 4, 2004.
