Patriots double up Saints 10-5 behind Noble effort

FLORENCE, SC – Junior designated hitter Darius Nobles, making his first start as a Patriot, went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in as Francis Marion University defeated Limestone College 10-5, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion evens its season mark at 3-3, while the Saints drop to 1-5.  The two teams will play the rubber game of their three-game weekend series, but in Gaffney on Limestone's home field, Sunday at 3 p.m.

The next home game for the Patriots will be Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. against Mercy College (NY).

Nobles singled, doubled, and homered, coming within a triple of becoming only the fifth Patriot to ever hit for the cycle.  Junior first baseman Todd Mangum doubled twice and drove in four runs, while junior third baseman Todd Mattox went 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBIs.

FMU junior left-hander Weston Rogers (1-1) earned the win by pitching six innings.  He scattered nine hits, but allowed only one earned run while fanning eight.  Junior righty Bailey Wendel pitched the final three frames to record his second save of 2020.

Limestone southpaw Anthony Alejandro (0-1) surrendered seven runs over 3.1 innings and absorbed the loss.

First baseman Benjamin Huber went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Saints at the plate.

FMU tallied four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run triple to center by Mattox.  After Limestone trimmed the margin to 4-3 with a trio of runs in the top of the fourth, Francis Marion responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning – all coming home on a bases-loaded double to left centerfield by Mangum.

Single runs by Limestone in the fifth and seventh cut the deficit to 7-5.  A 385-foot solo homer to left center by Nobles and a run-scoring single through the left side by junior centerfielder Bill Hanna expanded the Patriot advantage to 9-5.  Hanna also finished the game with two hits. An RBI-double in the eighth by Magnum accounted for the final run.

Rogers and Wendel combined for 10 strikeouts and Patriots hurlers have now fanned 60 batters in 53.0 innings this season.
