Columbia natives shine in Patriot road loss

MORROW, GA – The Columbia, S.C., tandem of junior Keith Matthews and sophomore Winston Hill combined for 55 points and 29 rebounds, but Francis Marion University came up just short with a late rally falling 102-98 on the road to Clayton State University, Saturday evening (Feb. 15) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

FMU is in the midst of a three-game road trip and will play at Georgia College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Matthews led the Patriots with 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.  Hill tallied 27 points and 15 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the year.  Both rebound totals were new career highs for the two players.

FMU sophomore swingman Trey Jones pumped in a career-high 18 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, coming off the Patriot bench.  Sophomore Alex Cox added 10 points and senior point guard Jaquez Smith against flirted with a triple-double as he recorded nine points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists.

Six Lakers scored in double-digits led by Byron Abrams with 20 points.

Clayton State led by as many as 11 points in the opening half, but Francis Marion trimmed the margin to six (48-42) at halftime.  The lead swelled to 10 midway through the second half, at 74-64, but the Patriots rallied to deadlock the contest at 81-81 on a fast-break lay-in by Matthews with 5:58 left.  A dunk by Matthews again tied the game (83-83), but the Lakers took the lead for good 24 seconds later when Kyle Kincey converted a lay-up.

An inside hoop by Hill got FMU to within 100-98 with nine seconds left, but Bryan Hart sealed the decision with a pair of free throws.

FMU held a commanding 54-36 rebounding edge and a resulting 27-9 advantage in second-chance points.
