Long Balls help Patriots to sweep of Crusaders, 16-0 and 8-1

BELMONT, NC – Home runs by Janecia Hemingway, Addie May, and Savannah Rosson led Francis Marion University to 16-0 and 8-1 victories over Belmont Abbey College, Saturday (Feb. 8) afternoon in a non-conference softball twinbill.

The unbeaten Patriots (6-0) will return home to host Newberry College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

In the first game, junior right-handed pitcher Katelyn Ellard improved to 3-0 on the season, pitching five innings and only giving up two hits to the Crusaders (0-2) offense. Both hits came in the final frame. Ellard walked one batter and struck out six.

Patriot batters rapped out 11 hits including two doubles from freshman right-fielder Carson Shannon, who also had a team-high five RBIs.

FMU scored once in the second inning to take the lead, and never conceded. The Patriots scored six more times in the third, three times in the fourth, and then six times again in the fifth inning, including a solo shot to right field from Hemingway, who was pinch hitting.

Senior right-handed pitcher Annabeth Watkins (0-1) took the loss by giving up five hits and seven runs in two innings of work.

On the mound in the second game for the Patriots was the sophomore righty Hemingway who improved to 2-0. She pitched six innings, fanning 10 batters (3 looking), and scattering four hits, while also batting 2-for-3.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the third on a single through the left side by Rosson, a freshman designated hitter. Later that inning, May, a sophomore first baseman, hit a 3-run homer to left center to give FMU a 4-0 advantage. Francis Marion scored again in the fourth inning off a single down the right field line from Shannon to extend the margin to 5-0.

Rosson helped to extend the lead even further in the sixth inning with a 3-run homer to secure the win.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jordanna Shorts (0-1) pitched four innings, giving up nine hits and five runs. Watkins returned to the rubber to pitch two more innings, giving up four hits and three runs.  The second contest was shortened to six innings due to darkness on a day that also included snow showers.

The lone Crusader run came in the bottom of the fourth off of a solo home run to left field from first baseman Payton Whitley.

Both May and Patriot junior left fielder Jordan Carlson finished with four hits in the doubleheader.
