Matsil’s two-run single paves way for 6-4 FMU victory

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman shortstop Megan Matsil laced a two-out, two-run single to center field that provided the winning margin as Francis Marion University outlasted Chowan University 6-4, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) in the 2020 Patriot Invitational softball tournament.

The Patriots (10-1) played Mars Hill University later Saturday night.

Sophomore Janecia Hemingway started the game in the circle for the Patriots, but moved to third baseman in the third inning. Junior right-hander Katelyn Ellard (5-1) took over the pitching duties and earned the win with 4.2 innings of work that saw her allow only one run on three hits with nine strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Hemingway went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three times. Sophomore first baseman Addie May also went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Chowan (3-4) scored once in the top of the first and three more times in the third, but the Patriots kept up with the Hawks matching their numbers with one run in the first and three in the third to deadlock the game at 4-4 going into the fourth frame.

Francis Marion took the lead in the fourth when Matsil drove home Hemingway and freshman right fielder Carson Shannon.  Ellard did not allow a hit over the final three innings.

EmmaRae Flores (1-2) put in 6.0 innings of work for the Hawks, allowing eight hits and the six Patriot runs.
